Luka Modric has been named the best player in world football by FIFA, with the Croatian midfielder receiving the award at the ceremony in Zurich on Monday night. The 2022 World Cup winner was presented with the prestigious accolade after a year where he won three major titles – the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

It is the second time that Modric has been voted as the world's best player, having previously received the honour in 2018. He joins Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as players to have won the award twice before, while also becoming the first ever player to win it three times.

The 34-year-old's achievements this season were nothing short of remarkable, as he led Real Madrid to victory in the UEFA Champions League, winning the competition for the sixth time in his career.
